FAQ
What is Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatment?
Intense Pulsed Light hair removal is a new and advanced, long-term hair removal method. The therapist uses a hand piece, over the clients skin. The hand piece produces a beam of filtered light, which is absorbed by the hair. When the pigment in the hair follicle absorbs this light, the energy is converted into a gentle heat. The heat results in the damage of the hair follicle. This causes delayed re-growth of the hair, resulting in permanent destruction of the hair follicle.
Intense Pulse Light can also be used at different wavelengths to improve the appearance of aging skin. It can be performed, on the face (not eyes or nose),neck, chest and hands to improve signs of aging.
What is Elight or VE Light?
Elight is a combination of IPL and Radio Frequency - It is the latest technology that works well on both light and dark hair color as well as on both light a dark skin types.
Can I operate the machine?
Yes, all the machines are very easy to operate - They all come with a training manual(some with a CD/DVD)
If or when you require further training, we can refer you to the appropriate professional training course in your area(if possible).
How does IPL & Elight treatments work?
In a nutshell, the therapist spreads an amount of cooling gel thinly over the area to be treated. Then the optical head is guided over this area and light flashes are instantaneously discharged on the skin. The whole area is covered in the same manner. A typical treatment session takes 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Clients should be made aware that they may feel a slight discomfort but that quickly disappears after treatment. Furthermore a mild to moderate redness immediately after treatment that normally disappears after 24 hours maximum may occur. A temporary increase or decrease in skin pigmentation may also occur.
How long does a treatment take?
Practice makes perfect but as a rule of thumb a treatment will on average take less time than waxing, Smaller areas, such as the face or back of the neck, can be done in a minute. Larger area such as a pair of legs can take up to half an hour but usually nearer to the twenty minutes. How many treatments will a client need?
Four to six treatments on average. This of course depends on several factors such as the clients hair growth and skin type. Intense Pulse Light disables hair follicles in the active stage of hair growth cycle. The follicles in the dormant stage are not affected by the Intense Pulse Light but when they become active will be treated at the subsequent treatments.
What is the difference between laser and Intense Pulse Light?
Laser is a single color of light, which means all the rays are the same wavelength. There are a number of different lasers used for hair removal. Their effectiveness varies with what the wavelength is. Some lasers are very effective, others are not so good, which is why one hears a lot of variation in results.
Intense Pulsed Light is broad spectrum light, made up of a range of wavelengths and colors. This range means one can treat more hair types effectively, with more consistent results. Besides removing hair from face and all body areas, Intense Pulsed Light has other uses. It can treat sun damage, pigmentation on face, hands and chests, small blood vessels and diffuse redness found on the face and chest. How do the results of IPL beauty light compare with laser-based hair removal systems?
IPL & Elight delivers the longest lasting results available today. Your client can achieve a permanent reduction of hair re-growth of about 20 to 28% after only one treatment. The most dramatic changes normally occur after the second treatment. Multiple treatments (normally from 4 to 8) can reach 80% of hair reduction in various body areas. Only few people may require extra treatments. Secondly it is quicker. The size of an IPL optical window (spot size) is much larger than the laser equivalent and therefore covers a much larger area per flash.
How much should I pay for an IPL or Elight machine?
Prices range from $8,000 to $200,000+ depending on the machine.

Contra-indications (reasons why IPL may not be suitable for you)
Recent sunburn
Unprotected sun exposure or solarium use 4 weeks prior to treatment
Pregnancy
History of seizures
Severe dermatitis or eczema (within the treatment area)
Active infections
Roaccutane use in the last 6 months
Herpes 1 or 2 (within the treatment area)
Very dark skin
Removing hair by the root e.g. waxing or tweezing 4 weeks prior to treatment (hair removal only)
Photo sensitising medications are best avoided
Potential Complications:
Unfortunately, there are some potential complications associated with IPL treatments. At CosMedical Skin Solutions we perform test spots within 3 days prior to your actual treatment, to allow an accurate evaluation of the skins response. This helps to optomise treatment outcomes and significantly reduces potential complications, which include:
Prolonged redness and swelling lasting up to 4 days may occur.
Darker patches of pigment on the skin may occur a couple of weeks after treatment which can last from 2 weeks up to 1 year (this is not the immediate darkening of pigment we expect when treating pigmentation). You are more at risk of this occurring if you have a darker skin type.
Whiter patches on the skin can occur. This can last 2 weeks up to 1 year though also has the potential to be permanent. You are more at risk of this occurring if you have a darker skin type.
Blistering rarely occurs and will usually settle within 2 hours with application of ice. If you do get a blister, it is important that you don’t pick it as it may leave a scar.
Pre -Treatment Recommendations: Discontinue sun exposure 4 weeks prior to your treatment. Do not use fake tan 1-2 weeks prior to your treatment. Use an SPF 30 daily. If having IPL hair removal, do not wax, tweeze or pluck the hair for 4 weeks prior to your treatment. Shaving or depilatory creams are fine and you will need to shave the treatment site before your IPL session. If you have a history of herpes close to the area being treated, it is recommended that you take antiviral medication before the treatment.
The react after the IPL treatment: Most patients will experience a sunburn like sensation that lasts 2 to 5 hours which is often associated with mild to moderate redness. The treated area is generally sensitive to heat for 2 days following treatment. After hair removal the skin may appear spotty, this is inflammation caused from the heat absorbed in the hair follicle and can last 2 to 24 hours. After treatment of pigmented lesions the lesion will go darker sometimes almost black, then will fall off within 7 to 28 days (depending on the area of the body) or it will just gradually fade. After treatment of vascular lesions they will either disappear immediately or appear grey or purplish in colour. Diffuse redness immediately appears more red, then gradually lightens within 2-3 weeks. Vascular treatments generally require 3-4 weekly treatments for best results.
